I’ve been dying to visit Matchabar for months, even before the second location opened in Chelsea last fall. Last weekend I finally made it to the hip matcha spot.
The shop sits on a quiet Chelsea street, tucked away on 15th street between 7th and 8th Avenue. I actually had to stop and look up the address again because I couldn’t spot the unassuming green-and-white striped facade from the corner.
It was a rather dreary and rainy day when I visited, so apologizing in advance for the quality of the photos – the interior is tucked pretty far inside and despite large front windows, I couldn’t get any good lighting to get shots of my goodies. I did, however, get a pretty good shot of the awesome wallpaper situation they’ve got going on (priorities, people).
For those who don’t know, matcha is a powder created from green tea leaves. It is traditionally used in Japanese cuisine, often candy and sweets. In the US it has recently experienced a serge in popularity, partly for its health benefits. The match powder is very rich in antioxidants and can reduce inflammation and has anti-aging properties. It also contains very high levels of caffeine, though it is known for causing a calmer alertness than coffee which just makes you jittery.
At Matchabar, I opted for one of the summer specials, which was the watermelon basil matcha. It features watermelon juice on the bottom and is overall just really pretty and fun which is 50 percent of the reason I ordered it, let’s be honest. They messed up my cup and it had two stacked together which prevented getting a good photo for the ‘Gram, but I’ve sourced one below from the Matchbar Instgram so you can get a good peak.
I also got that matcha donut hole which, to be honest, tasted just like a regular donut hole. While it was good and I definitely enjoyed it, didn’t get too much matcha flavor. Overall, this is a great spot to pop in and grab a quick drink. But be forewarned of the hefty price tag – a medium drink and the donut hole ran me $8, which was a little steep, though expected at a trendy spot. If you’re going for a huge order, just know you could rack up a hefty price tag. If nothing else, it’s worth the visit to Matchbar Chelsea for the Instagram.
