I have been crazy busy at work recently, and haven’t had much of a chance to go exploring or check out anything particularly post-worthy. So, in lieu of a new post here’s a rundown of fun events coming up in New York that I’m definitely planning to attend. Since it’s spring, everything fun is starting to happen and I don’t want to miss anything (major FOMO) so I’ve been scouring the internet for fun stuff to do. If I missed any fun upcoming events, let me know!
April 11: “In Search Of” at the Highline
Friends of the High Line is hosting a unique dating event at the High Line’s 14th Street Passage. The event, entitled “In Search Of” boasts an afternoon of music, “matchmaking mischief,” and an excuse to be outdoors in the (hopefully) nice spring weather. Live music, cash only food and drinks, and fun attractions like tarot card readings await the hoards of single New Yorkers tomorrow. If you’re bored, check it out – the event itself is entirely free.
April 25-April 26: Brooklyn Botanic Gardens Cherry Blossom Festival: Sakura Matsuri
I have been counting down the days to this event, and already have my tickets in my inbox. Held only for one weekend, this cherry blossom festival celebrates not only the beautiful blooms, but all facets of Japanese culture. The days’ schedules are jam-packed, and feature traditional events like “Bonsai Basics,” a Japanese tea ceremony, and a Kabuki show. But, if you’re only there for the flowers, there are garden tours throughout the entire day.
May 2: Derby Party, Hotel Chantelle
Nothing says spring like the Kentucky Derby. So, what better way to honor the warm weather than by donning some Lilly Pulitzer and a ridiculous hat, and partying the night away? A group of my friends and I are heading down to Hotel Chantelle for their Derby Style event. We sprung for a table to have a place to relax and hang out, a free drink at the door, and to keep the drinks flowing. General admission tickets are still available, but I have a feeling these will sell out quick.
May 9: Bridgehampton Half Marathon
I’m heading out to the Hamptons to watch my friend Chris crush it in his second half marathon. The Bridgehampton Half still has open registration for any who are more motivated than me and feel like running 13 miles in a few weeks. If anyone goes, I’ll be there cheering you on! Plus, it’s a great excuse to get out of the city for a few days.
May 31: The Bloody Mary Liberation Party
For those who were devastated (like me) that the April 12 Bloody Mary Festival tickets sold out, here’s a good alternate option. The Bloodys & BBQ event is happening at Bed Stuy’s Beast of Bourbon. The three-hour event features four different Bloody Mary’s from Brooklyn eateries plus a menu of smoked pulled chicken, pork rib, brisket beans and corn bread – Yum.
June 13-June 14: Jazz Age Lawn Party
I am SO excited for this event. Any excuse to dress in decade-specific costumes is great in my book. It only happens two weekends this summer, and I am getting my tickets ASAP so I don’t miss this. Vendors, food, swing dancing, drinks, and a ferry ride to Governor’s Island – what more could you want? This is definitely a can’t-miss event. If you don’t believe me, check out the photo gallery from last year.
June 20: Girls on the Run 5K
Girls on the Run, a nonprofit organization promoting healthy body image and confidence in young girls, is hosting one of their 5K runs this summer. GOTR is a great organization, and worthy of the financial and volunteer support. My roommate and I will be there as “Sparkle Runners” (think tutus, lots of glitter, and neon) running and cheering on the girls and their coaches alike to finish their challenge! A fun day, a great organization, and an excuse to wear a tutu. Best 5K ever.
